Old Testament Liturgy:

Job 38:1-7, (34-41)

The Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind:

"Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

Gird up your loins like a man,

I will question you, and you shall declare to me.

"Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?

Tell me, if you have understanding.

Who determined its measurements—surely you know!

Or who stretched the line upon it?

On what were its bases sunk,

or who laid its cornerstone

when the morning stars sang together

and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?

[“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds,

so that a flood of waters may cover you?

Can you send forth lightnings, so that they may go

and say to you, ‘Here we are’?

Who has put wisdom in the inward parts,

or given understanding to the mind?

Who has the wisdom to number the clouds?

Or who can tilt the waterskins of the heavens,

when the dust runs into a mass

and the clods cling together?

“Can you hunt the prey for the lion,

or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

when they crouch in their dens,

or lie in wait in their covert?

Who provides for the raven its prey,

when its young ones cry to God,

and wander about for lack of food?”]

See page 916 of The New Century Hymnal (NCH) Lectionary

for Proper 24. Suggested songs (shortened):

Jesu, Jesu, fill us 498

You servants of God 305

In a lowly manger 162

Womb of life, and 274

Be not dismayed 460

We worship you, God 24

From Speaker Lauren Renee Hotchkiss:

My sermon title will be Maintaining Faith (part III), and is based in the Job reading (38:1-7, 34-41) and what has occurred up to this point in Job's story.

I'll be performing two songs live on Sunday:

As the Prelude I'll be doing a song by Brendan Graham and Rolf Lovland entitled "You Raise Me Up"

As a sermon response piece I'll be doing my song "Let Me Journey with You"

Job 38:1-7 NIV

38 Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said:

2

“Who is this that obscures my plans

with words without knowledge?

3

Brace yourself like a man;

I will question you,

and you shall answer me.

4

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?

Tell me, if you understand.

5

Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!

Who stretched a measuring line across it?

6

On what were its footings set,

or who laid its cornerstone—

7

while the morning stars sang together

and all the angels[a] shouted for joy?

Job 38:34-41 NIV

34

“Can you raise your voice to the clouds

and cover yourself with a flood of water?

35

Do you send the lightning bolts on their way?

Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?

36

Who gives the ibis wisdom

or gives the rooster understanding?

37

Who has the wisdom to count the clouds?

Who can tip over the water jars of the heavens

38

when the dust becomes hard

and the clods of earth stick together?

39

“Do you hunt the prey for the lioness

and satisfy the hunger of the lions

40

when they crouch in their dens

or lie in wait in a thicket?

41

Who provides food for the raven

when its young cry out to God

and wander about for lack of food?
